Trump Signs A New Order That Could Make Him One Of The Most Powerful Presidents Ever

According to experts, Donald Trump’s actions could significantly increase his influence because they go against what previous US presidents have actively refused to oppose.

Trump has already signed a number of executive orders during his second term in office, such as one that targets transgender women in sports, another that renames the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and one that imposes tax tariffs on China and Canada.

The father of five also signed orders earlier this month to stop the schools from requiring the Covid-19 vaccine, to stop buying paper straws, and to establish a new White House Faith Office to replace the “White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.”

President Trump, 78, signed his most recent executive order on Tuesday, February 18, bringing infamously autonomous agencies under White House authority.

How the executive order would affect independent agencies

As a result, all agencies—including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)—must now submit draft regulations for the president to examine rather than just approving them.

Politicians must also be consulted regarding their “priorities and strategic plans.”

Additionally, it states that the erstwhile independent agencies would not be “carved out.” The monetary policy operations of the Federal Reserve are the only exception to this rule.

According to the directive, Trump will now oversee all executive branch officials and staff, and the Office of Management and Budget will make sure tax dollars are being “spent wisely.”

“The President and the Attorney General (subject to the President’s supervision and control) will interpret the law for the executive branch, instead of having separate agencies adopt conflicting interpretations,” the order continues.

The paper names three former independent agencies: the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the SEC, and the FTC.

According to Trump, they have all “executed tremendous power over the American people without Presidential oversight” in the past.

The executive order claims that these three will “no longer impose rules on the American people without oversight or accountability” after issuing rules and regulations that have previously cost the nation billions of dollars.

The writ asserts that executive authority is “no place” in the US.

“Executive power without responsibility has no place in our Republic. The United States was founded on the principle that the government should be accountable to the people,” the order reads.

“That is why the Founders created a single President who is alone vested with ‘the executive Power’ and responsibility to ‘take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed’.”

Politico claims that Russell Vought, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s acting director, will now be responsible for “establishing performance standards and management objectives” for the directors of the independent agencies.

It’s said that he will ‘report frequently to the president’ on the agencies’ performance and efficiency while making ‘necessary and appropriate’ modifications to the agencies’ budgets.

This will all be finished in line with the promotion of the President’s ‘policies and priorities’.

How the executive order could make Trump one of the most powerful presidents in history

Politico claims that Trump has significantly increased his authority as the 47th President of the United States by “reigning in” and interfering with the independent agencies.

He is also defying convention, as previous presidents such as Barack Obama have not only refused to question the FTC, SEC, and FCC’s independence in the past but have also made a concerted effort to avoid giving the impression that they are interfering.

According to the journal, several independent agency leaders—who will now be subject to Trump’s orders—have held their positions longer than real presidents.

They are said to be doing this to “help shield them from political pressure.”
