The officials stressed that foreign drug cartels, particularly those trafficking synthetic opioids like fentanyl, pose a serious danger to the United States. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard stated that cartels were responsible for the deaths of over 54,000 U.S. citizens in the year ending October 2024. These deaths were attributed to synthetic opioids, with fentanyl being the most lethal.
